Avery Smith Obituary

Avery Lee Smith, 94, of O'Fallon, MO, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Delmar Gardens of O'Fallon with his family by his side. He was born in Mill Spring, MO, May 23, 1930, to Arthur Lee and Lucy Arena (Moss) Smith.

Avery was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He graduated from Ellsinore High School in April 1948, and in 1951, enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving in the Korean War. Upon returning, he married his beloved wife, Elizabeth Joy Worley, in 1952. The couple shared a wonderful marriage filled with love, travel, and cherished memories.

A devoted member of the community, Avery's commitment to service was evident throughout his life. He earned the Master of the Royal Secret of the 32nd Degree in the Scottish Rite in 1975 and was a proud member of the Progress Lodge 657 and Mizpah-Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 40 in Florissant, MO. Avery also belonged to the American Legion 388, the Moolah Shrine (Motor Patrol and Provost Guard), and the Florissant Rotary Club.

A licensed barber since 1956, Avery owned his own barber shop in Florissant, where he worked for many years before retiring. He was known for his steady hand and the genuine care he showed to his customers.

A passionate fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Avery enjoyed watching the team play whenever he could. He and Elizabeth traveled the world together, creating lasting memories in the places they visited. Avery also found joy in the fellowship of his church family at Florissant Valley Baptist Church, where he formed lasting friendships.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty-six years; twelve brothers and sisters.

Avery is survived by his children: Jeffrey Smith and wife Donna, Angela “Beth” Imel and husband Charles; grandchildren: Alissa Griffing and husband Aaron, Joshua Smith, and Michael Smith; many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Avery’s legacy of service, love, and friendship will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be dearly missed and remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and generosity; but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
