Charles (Charlie) Ray Miller, 88, of Piedmont MO, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 24, 2024, at his home. He was born in Shook MO on October 27, 1935, to Lola Gertrude (Davis) and Charles Euel Miller.
Charlie was united in marriage to Peggy (Riggins) Miller on March 3, 1956. They eloped to Hernando, MS. To this union, three sons were born, Gregory Miller of Piedmont MO, Douglas Miller and wife Sheri of Holly Springs, NC, and Bradley Miller and wife Tonya of Piedmont. On August 30, 1980, Peggy Miller passed away at home. On October 10, 1981, Charlie was united in marriage to Patricia (Sullivan) Miller, and she survives of the home. Other survivors include daughter Lisa Sullivan of Poplar Bluff; grandchildren: Sawyer Miller, Grant Miller, McKenzie Miller, Connor Miller; great-grandchildren: Roman and Mela Miller; several nephews, nieces, extended family, and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Peggy; one sister: Yvonne Miller; two brothers: Jerry Miller and Larry Miller.
In his younger years, Charlie attended a one room schoolhouse in Crommertown, located in Carter County, before graduating from Ellsinore High School in 1953. Charlie worked until retirement at the age of eighty years old. Over forty of those years were for Royal Oak Charcoal local branch in Ellsinore as a slab buyer. He also owned a trucking company for many years. Charlie was very well known as a great baseball and basketball player in his younger years. In basketball, Charlie still holds the record for most points in a game for East Carter with sixty-seven points. In baseball, Charlie was an exceptional left-handed pitcher. Many sports people that witnessed Charlie pitch remarked that his explosive fastball would easily hit mid 90’s in today’s game.
In later years, Charlie enjoyed playing slow pitch softball. He was known as the left-handed first basemen that hit for power with the front leg hike. The last time he played at the age of seventy he hit a home run over the fence. Charlie was very involved in his sons’ athletics, coaching them in many of those summers. Another favorite hobby of Charlie’s was finding and visiting old cemeteries. He would often stop and talk to local townspeople to find out where a particular cemetery was located. He was also an avid reader of the Civil War, particularly of Missouri’s involvement. This led him to serve as a member of the Civil War Round Table in Pilot Knob MO. Charlie was also a past member of the Clearwater School Board and a past member of the Piedmont Rotary Club. Charlie was baptized twenty years ago at Brushy Creek while he attended the Ijames Hill Baptist Church. In Charlie’s latter years, his decline in health kept him from traveling, but he still enjoyed and appreciated visits and phone calls from family and friends. Charlie was very well liked and respected. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
