Loyd Thompson, lovingly known to many as “The Trapper,” 82, of Patterson, MO, passed away Friday, March 20, 2026, at his residence. He was born on September 29, 1943, in Patterson, MO, the place he proudly called home his entire life.
Loyd was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He married the love of his life, Connie Hanning, on December 5, 1976. Loyd and Connie built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Together they enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and trapping—creating memories in the great outdoors that would last a lifetime. Their bond was one of deep love, partnership, and fun.
Loyd dedicated fifty-one years of hard work and leadership as a foreman for McCarthy Construction. He was respected for his strong work ethic, steady guidance, and commitment to doing every job right. He took great pride in his work and in the many friendships he formed along the way.
He is preceded in death by his sisters, Sara Haywood and Mary Graddy; and brothers-in-law, Michael Hanning and Bruce Hanning.
Loyd is survived by his loving wife of fifty years; daughter, Tonya Thompson; adopted son, Caleb Westmoreland and wife Massie; and cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Taylor, Tyler, and Danielle, who brought immense pride and joy to his life.
Loyd is also survived by his brother-in-law, Harold Graddy; niece, Ciera Woodruff and her husband Nate, along with their children, Kilyn and Korbin; nephews Sean Allen Hanning—whom Loyd proudly said was the hardest working young boy, and now man, he had ever met—Michael Hanning and wife Rachell; Jason Hanning, with heartfelt thanks for the tremendous help and kindness shown to Loyd and Connie, we can never thank you enough; and Jordyn Hanning and husband Eric, along with their two beautiful babies, Aria and Grayson.
Loyd shared a special bond with his sister-in-law and best friend, Karen Marsala Hanning, whom he considered one of the sweetest and kindest souls. The family extends their sincere gratitude for her constant love and support.
The family also wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Andy Gayle, nurses Candace and Amanda, as well as Laura Meyers for their compassionate care.
Loyd’s lifelong best friend, Erv Williamson, remained faithfully by his side through the years. He also treasured his friendships with Pat Story, Gene Parker, Jerry Belmar, Robbi at Zepher Café, Kim Miller, Elizabeth, and his wonderful neighbors, Matt and Jeana Hahn. The love and support of these dear friends meant so much to the family.
Loyd will be remembered for his strength, his stories, his unwavering loyalty, and his deep love for the outdoors and for those closest to him. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, laughter, and devotion to family. Loyd will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Jason Hanning you are the best.
