Mary Lee Thorsland Obituary

Mary "Lee" Elizabeth Thorsland, 92, of Arnold, MO formerly of Branson, and Wayne County, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2026, at her son’s residence in Arnold, MO.  Mary was born to William Beard and Viola (Hesley) Hutsell, November 30, 1933, in Poplar Bluff, MO. She grew up in Greenwood Valley and overcame many hardships during her childhood. After the early loss of her father, her mother lovingly raised Mary and her younger brothers, instilling in them strength, perseverance, and family values that Mary carried throughout her life. In her youth, Mary experienced profound joy and Heartbreaking loss, becoming the mother of Shirley Lee Henson and Howard Leon Henson. Tragically, Shirley passed away in infancy. Though her first marriage eventually ended, Mary’s determination to build a better future for herself and her son never wavered. On April 18, 1955, she married the love of her life, John Eric Thorsland Jr. Together they built a loving home, and raised their daughter, Johnda Lee (Thorsland) Meaux. They shared forty-one happy years together before his passing in 1997. Mary was a hard worker who held a wide variety of jobs through the years, from her work in metal fabrication to a later-life stint serving as personal chauffeur to an avid antiques procurer – her husband John. She dedicated many years to helping others through her work as a self-employed caregiver, providing comfort, companionship, and practical support to those in need. Mary also took time to slow down and enjoy life, particularly savoring a good hoobie-doo (banana split). A talented seamstress, she pieced many beautiful quilts and garments over the years. Nature was a source of peace and enjoyment, and she especially enjoyed being outdoors while hunting and fishing. She loved listening to live country and gospel music and took great pride in attending her son Leon’s performances. Above all, she treasured time spent with her family and took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was of the Christian faith. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband John; daughter, Shirley Lee Henson; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Henson, grandson, Eric Henson; and brother, William “Billy” Beard. Mary is survived by her son, Howard "Leon" Henson of Arnold; daughter, Johnda Meaux and husband, Greg, of Hazelwood; grandchildren, Julie Rager and husband George “Bud”, Crystal Meaux and husband, Frank Zito, and Justin Meaux; great-grandchildren: Spencer Meaux-Zito and Piper Meaux-Zito; and Scott Stevenson beloved husband of her late grandson Eric; brother, Donald Beard and wife Patricia of Hurley,  as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Mary Lee was a beloved mother, sister, grandma, Nanny, Granny Nanny, and an old sweet thing who will be deeply missed by those who loved her.
