Nick Fliter, 94, of Piedmont, MO, went to be with his Lord on Friday, June 28, 2024, at his residence near Piedmont. He was born December 1, 1929, in East Chicago, IN, to parents Charles and Helen (Sonery) Fliter who had emigrated from Austria.
Nick was a loving father, grandfather, and friend. He proudly served his country in United States Army at the onset of Korean War from August 25, 1951, spending three years in Korea and one year in occupied Germany with his service ending June 16, 1955. During his enlistment he was awarded the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, two bronze service stars, Army of Occupation Medal Germany. Nick served in the 42nd Armored Infantry Battalion. Upon returning home he worked in Phosphate Mines doing maintenance on heavy equipment at Wimauma, Florida for over twenty years prior to retirement. After retirement he moved to Missouri where he became active with Wayne County Sheriff’s Department for over twenty years. Nick started off as litter control officer and later served as inmate transport officer, and finally was a bailiff at Wayne County courthouse. He continued to work until he was ninety-three years old.
Nick has always had Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He served the Lord and the church with joy and a glad heart and had past attended Highway Missionary Baptist Church near Greenville. Nick never met a stranger, and everyone loved his never-ending energy. Everyone has their own “Nick” story. Family and friends are rejoicing in the knowledge that he is with the Lord and enjoying the beginning of his life in eternity.
In addition to his parents, Nick is preceded in death by brothers: Charlie, Jack, and Johnny Fliter; sisters: Vicki, Mary, and Angie Fliter.
Nick is survived by his daughters: Pam Veres, April Dawn Ash and husband Dan, Lonnie Mason Watts and Robyn Lynn Best; his son: Nicholas Fliter Jr.; fifteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren. Nick will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and community.
Visitation was held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Highway Missionary Baptist Church, Greenville. Funeral service followed at 11:30 am, also at Highway Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Robert Randolph ministered to the family. Allen Shaw, Perry Meyer, Tommy Leach, David Malene, Terry Brooks, and Sean Smith served as pallbearers. Burial was in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Bloomfield, MO, with full military honors provided by the United States Army and American Legion Post 281 of Piedmont.
