Philip L. Baker, age 79, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, in Poplar Bluff, MO, surrounded by his family after a battle with pneumonia.
Phil was born on November 10, 1946, in Jamestown, New York, to Lloyd Grant and Lucille (Burch) Baker. He was a graduate of Falconer High School, Class of 1965, and later earned his degree from Chicago Tech in 1978.
A proud and dedicated patriot, Phil served his country honorably in the United States Army, retiring at the rank of Sergeant (E-6) after a distinguished career spanning 1965–1992. He was a Vietnam Era veteran and served sixteen years in the Army National Guard.
Following his military service, Phil built a long and successful career with Goodyear/Dunlop, where he worked from 1979 until his retirement in 2009. He later made his home in Piedmont, after previously residing in Western New York.
Phil was deeply committed to serving his community, especially his fellow veterans. He was a longtime and devoted member of the Eagles and the American Legion, where he held numerous leadership roles, including Eagles President, American Legion Past Post Commander, District Commander, County Commander, and Zone Commander. His dedication to these organizations reflected his lifelong commitment to helping others and doing what was right.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and soulmate, Sharon Baker, who passed just short of three months before him, and his sister, Janice Green.
Phil is survived by his sons: Matthew Baker; Brian Baker and wife Brandi all of Chesterfield, VA; stepsons: James “Jay” Szczesny of Lackawanna, NY, David Schneider of NY; many dearly loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of dear friends whose lives he touched through his generosity, leadership, and unwavering integrity.
Phil will be remembered most for his dedication to helping others, his tireless advocacy for veterans, and his steadfast belief in living an honorable life. His legacy lives on through his service to the American Legion and his hope that others will be inspired to follow in his footsteps.
