Vere "Ed" Church Obituary

Vere "Ed" Edward Church, 79, of Piedmont, MO, passed away Friday, April 4, 2025, at his residence. He was born in Moline, Illinois, December 8, 1945, to Elmer Jackson and Alice Arlene (Towne) Church.

Ed was a loving brother, uncle, and friend. His legacy will be remembered by those who were fortunate to know him. He earned an associate’s degree in business management from Three Rivers Community College. Ed served many years as a Postman with the United States Postal Service in St. Louis, where he developed lasting relationships and earned the respect of his colleagues and community. He also served as deputy sheriff for Wayne County Sheriff Department and also Piedmont Police Department.

Ed proudly served in the United States Army, working directly under a four-star general. He also helped correct veteran’s records in Washington DC. Ed dedicated his time as a member of the Metro District Elks Lodge. He held roles as Sultan Ruler and District Auditor, making a positive impact in the lives of others through his leadership and commitment to service.

In his younger years, Ed enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including hunting and fishing, but his greatest joy was always his family. He cherished every moment spent with loved ones and was a steadfast presence in their lives.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Terrance "Terry" Church.

Ed is survived by his sister: Sandra Kay Fuller of Smithville, TX; sister-in-law: Linda Church of Florissant; nieces: Mary Swoboda; nephews: Michael Church and Charles “Chuck”  Church and several friends who will miss him deeply.

Visitation was held at 5:00 pm, Friday, April 11, 2025, at Ruegg Funeral Home, Piedmont Chapel. Funeral service was held at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 12, 2025, also in Piedmont Chapel. Pastor Richard Sanders ministered to the family. Charles Church, Michael Church, Kurt Rhea, Richard Sanders, Marvin Beryman, and Pat Crowley served as pallbearers. Burial followed in Clay Cemetery with full military honors provided by the United States Army and American Legion Post 281 of Piedmont. Online condolences can be made at www.rueggfuneralhomes.com
