Vernon Leigh Greer, 70, of Piedmont, Missouri, passed away on November 18, 2024, in Marshfield, MO. He was born on June 17, 1954, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to George and Doris (Hillier) Greer. Vernon was united in marriage to Anita (Cameron) Greer on September 9, 1977, in Phoenix, AZ, and they enjoyed a fulfilling thirty-seven-year marriage.
Vernon was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He served in the United States Army from 1972 to 1976. Vernon was an avid chess player and was actively involved in the Piedmont Chess Club. He loved the game and enjoyed mentoring and teaching many young players the art of the game. Vernon also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, telling stories, and engaging in various hobbies such as playing Dungeons & Dragons, Magic the Gathering, board games, and PlayStation, Civilization was his favorite game. A passionate and avid reader, Vernon particularly enjoyed books by R.A. Salvatore, Jean M. Auel, and any book about chess, sharing his thoughts and enthusiasm about the books he read with others.
Vernon will be remembered for his wit, the stories he told, and the knowledge he shared. He was unapologetically himself and encouraged others to do the same. He made a lasting impact on those who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of thirty-seven years; daughters: Carrie Greer, Amanda Greer, and Doris Greer.
Vernon is survived by his sons: Vernon "Buddy" MacGregor and wife Serena of The Colony, TX, Douglas Greer and wife Michelle of Oak Point, TX; daughter: Tarina Greer of Springfield, MO; six grandchildren: Deanna Galart and husband James, Selena Larsen and husband Lars, Chloe Greer, Cameron MacGregor, Joann Greer, and Shelby Greer; nine great-grandchildren: Hagen, Allison, Quinn, and Arizona Galart, Lars and Freyja Larsen, Ansilee, and Sebastian Ramirez, and Izabella Drake. He also leaves behind many friends who he considered family.
Visitation was held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, November 23, 2024, at Ruegg Funeral Home, Piedmont Chapel. Memorial service followed at 3:00 pm, also in the Piedmont Chapel. Pastor Wayne Street ministered to the family. Ryan Deering and Jennifer Breeden both gave a heartfelt eulogy. Online condolences can be made at www.rueggfuneralhomes.com
